1. Amalgam
An alloy in which mercury is one of the metal components. In recent decades, amalgam was commonly used as a dental filling material due to its inexpensive cost and ease of use, and was commonly called “silver filling” due to amalgam’s silvery color.
2. Analgesic
Medication that dulls the perception of pain without producing unconsciousness.
3. Anesthesia
The temporary loss of feelings or sensation.
4. Anesthetic
A drug that produces a temporary loss of feeling or sensation. In dentistry, a topical anesthetic gel is commonly applied to the gum to numb the surface in preparation for an anesthetic injection like Lidocaine, a common dental anesthetic.
5. Antiseptic
An agent that prevents the growth or action of microorganisms, which is applied to living tissue.
